Our Story
It started with a table tennis table
The true story of how a table tennis table, doubles matches across departments, and a small web app became Office Sports.
A small team across the street
We were a new startup within a larger company. Our small team already had a great atmosphere, but we worked from a separate office across the street. We belonged to the same organization, yet in everyday life we mostly kept to ourselves.
Then, one morning, our boss arrived with a table tennis table.
We liked it immediately. A few casual rounds became regular matches, and regular matches quickly created questions. Who had already played whom? Who was actually best? Who was ready for a rematch? And how could we arrange more singles and doubles without losing track?
Why we built a web app
As a fintech team, building a small web app felt natural. We wanted an easy way to record results, see who had played whom, and organize singles and doubles. So we built a tracker for our table tennis matches.
The first version was simple. It recorded results and made the competition visible. Colleagues helped improve the interface, add small features, and host it. It became a team effort in the same way the matches had.
Doubles brought more people to the table
Doubles changed the dynamic. People from different departments teamed up, and before long colleagues from the office across the street were joining us too. The matches became more organized, the competition more intense, and the emotions more visible - in the best possible way.
The leaderboard mattered, but it was never only about finding the strongest player. The real value was the challenge before a match, the conversation afterwards, and the chance to play with someone you did not normally work beside.
The first version did not last forever
After a few months, the app was used less. Perhaps work became busier. Perhaps the first wave of excitement simply passed. We cannot point to one neat reason, and pretending otherwise would make the story less useful.
What stayed with us was the lesson: starting a competition is easy; giving it fresh reasons to continue is harder. Participation needs low-friction match tracking, visible progress, different formats, and moments that reset the stakes.
What the idea became
What began as a table tennis tracker has grown into a platform for different office sports. Today, Office Sports supports ongoing leagues, fair leaderboards, singles and team matches, and tournaments that bring fresh excitement when a league needs new energy.
The product is new, but the idea behind it remains the same as it was back in the office across the street: a simple game can give colleagues a reason to meet, play, laugh, and create a shared story between meetings.
